Illegal border crossings drop to lowest level since 1970: ‘Most secure border in American history’

Illegal crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border fell to a 55-year low in fiscal year 2025, with the majority of unauthorized attempts occurring during the final months of the Biden administration.
According to data released Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), federal authorities apprehended 237,565 migrants along the southwest border between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025. This marks the lowest annual total since 1970, when 201,780 migrants were intercepted.
The 2025 figure is also 87% lower than the average number of apprehensions over the past four fiscal years, which totaled roughly 1.86 million annually, DHS reports.
“We have had the most secure border in American history, and our end-of-year numbers prove it,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said. “This year, we shattered multiple records, including the lowest number of Southwest border apprehensions in 55 years.”
“Under President Trump, we have empowered and supported law enforcement to do their jobs, and they have delivered,” she added.
Most apprehensions in fiscal year 2025 occurred during the final three months of the Biden administration. Between 2021 and 2024, an average of 2.4 million migrants annually crossed the border illegally, according to DHS. During the first 111 days of fiscal year 2025, when Biden was still in office, border agents apprehended 172,026 individuals — 72% of the year’s total.
Over the following 254 days under President Trump, authorities recorded 65,539 apprehensions, representing 27% of the annual total. Monthly figures for September reached about 8,400 apprehensions, up from 6,300 in August but still far below historical averages.
For the fifth consecutive month, DHS reported zero migrant releases into the U.S. throughout September 2025. By contrast, in September 2024, Biden’s administration released 9,144 migrants into the country.
President Trump acted swiftly to secure the southern border upon taking office in January, deploying thousands of troops to deter illegal crossings, suspending certain asylum claims, and overhauling immigration policies established under Biden.
Trump also instructed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to apprehend and deport illegal migrants within the interior of the country. ICE is on track to deport 600,000 migrants this year, and more than 2 million illegal migrants have voluntarily left the U.S. since January, according to DHS data obtained by The Post.
