U.S. Ready to Replace All Russian Gas and Oil in Europe

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright sent a clear signal to European leaders in a recent Fox News interview, declaring that the United States is prepared today to fully replace Russian natural gas and refined petroleum products entering the continent.

“America is ready today to displace all the Russian gas entering Europe, and also all Russian refined petroleum products. We have the capacity. We are prepared to meet your needs,” Wright said.

Wright’s statement followed a six-day European tour, during which he promoted President Trump’s energy agenda. In Milan, Italy, he addressed the GasTech 2025 conference, where he highlighted Trump’s commitment to expanding U.S. gas exports as a pillar of global stability, affordability, and security. He then traveled to Brussels for talks with the European Parliament and the European Commission, urging an end to dependence on Russian energy and criticizing EU policies that drive up costs and discourage long-term supply agreements.

Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Europe has significantly reduced its reliance on Moscow, with Russian gas dropping from 45% of EU imports pre-war to 12% in the first eight months of 2025. Meanwhile, U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) rose to 26%, making America Europe’s largest supplier. Still, challenges remain: Russian LNG deliveries reached record highs in 2024, and countries like Hungary and Slovakia continue importing large volumes of Russian crude.

Wright linked America’s offer directly to President Trump’s peace strategy. “They are working in Europe to displace Russian energy, perhaps not as quickly as we’d like. The United States is prepared today to replace all the Russian gas entering Europe, as well as all Russian refined petroleum products. That’s why I spent six days there meeting with European leaders, assuring them we have the capacity and are ready to meet their needs; and the president’s agenda is peace—and to achieve peace, we must leave Putin without resources,” he explained.

This initiative builds on Trump’s July 2025 energy trade agreement with the EU, which obligates Europe to purchase $750 billion in U.S. oil, gas, and nuclear fuel by 2028. But Trump has since demanded stronger action. At the United Nations General Assembly on September 23, he accused the EU of “funding a war against itself” by continuing to buy Russian energy and called for an immediate halt. He also tied new U.S. sanctions on Moscow to NATO cutting energy ties entirely—a move that pushed the European Commission to propose ending Russian LNG imports by January 1, 2027, nearly a year ahead of schedule.

The latest sanctions package also targets Russia’s “shadow fleet” of 118 tankers and bans reinsurance for sanctioned vessels. For the Trump administration, this strategy is both an economic and geopolitical weapon: it strengthens U.S. energy dominance, undermines Russia’s war funding—which still brings in more than €1 billion annually from the EU—and forces Europe to align with allies rather than adversaries.

The difference from the Biden years is stark. Trump has promised to expand U.S. fossil fuel production by three million barrels of oil equivalent per day, with a major emphasis on natural gas. This not only supports American jobs in energy hubs like Texas and Louisiana but also fuels global markets with what the administration calls “freedom gas.”

The message is clear: Europe must decide whether to keep funding Vladimir Putin’s war machine or secure peace and sovereignty through transatlantic energy cooperation.
