Whenever you see the headline “Florida Man,” you know something unusual is coming. This time, it involves peacocks.
Authorities in Pasco County, Florida, arrested Craig Vogt, 61, of Hudson after he allegedly killed two of his own pet peacocks, cooked them, and ate them. Vogt now faces a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty.
According to investigators, Vogt admitted to killing the birds out of anger at his neighbor, who had been feeding them. He even wrote a letter warning her that he would continue killing his peacocks “to prove a point” if she didn’t stop.

An affidavit from the sheriff’s office states Vogt described cutting the birds’ necks, bleeding them, and later cooking one in a frying pan before eating it.
As deputies were taking him to jail, Vogt allegedly told them that once he is released, he plans to kill the rest of his peacocks so authorities cannot seize them. He is currently being held on a $25,000 bond.
This strange case comes as U.S. officials report a rise in the consumption of exotic animals. Just last month, Customs and Border Protection agents at Detroit Metropolitan Airport confiscated 52 pounds of monkey meat from a traveler arriving from Gabon. The traveler claimed it was antelope, but testing revealed otherwise. He was fined $300 but not arrested.
