On Thursday evening, a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia indicted former FBI Director James Comey on two counts: making false statements and obstruction of justice.

Declassified memos further show that Richman, who was also one of Comey’s personal lawyers, leaked classified information to The New York Times in 2017 in an effort to spur the appointment of a special counsel. Critics note that Comey did not disclose Richman’s role as his attorney or as an unpaid FBI employee until just before his congressional testimony.
The indictment marks a significant development in the ongoing scrutiny of Comey’s conduct during and after his tenure as FBI Director.
