The man accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk is not cooperating with investigators and has not confessed to the crime, Utah Governor Spencer Cox said in interviews on Sunday, according to outlets including the BBC.

The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, was arrested about 33 hours after Kirk was shot and killed during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University. The event was part of Kirk’s “American Comeback Tour” organized by his group, Turning Point USA.

In comments to the Guardian, Cox said Robinson comes from a conservative family but holds opposing political views. He described Robinson as having been “radicalized” and “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.” However, authorities have not yet identified a motive, the Associated Press reports.

Cox told ABC News, NBC News, and CNN that although Robinson has not been forthcoming, others close to him—including his roommate and reported partner—are cooperating with investigators. Cox said the partner, who is transitioning from male to female, had no prior knowledge of the shooting and has been “incredibly cooperative.”

The governor also addressed reports that Robinson had joked on Discord about being the shooter. According to Cox, friends initially dismissed the comments until Robinson allegedly admitted to them that he was responsible.

Robinson, a Utah native and former member of the Mormon church, is being held without bail on suspicion of aggravated murder and additional charges.

Charlie Kirk, 31, was a prominent conservative figure known for his opposition to abortion and transgender rights, as well as his support for President Donald Trump. Through Turning Point USA, he focused on engaging young conservatives and influencing college campuses.
