A 43-year-old African elephant named Ruth is recovering at the Milwaukee County Zoo after taking a fall earlier this month, prompting a unique rescue effort by zoo staff.
According to zoo officials, Ruth lost her footing during a scuffle with her herdmate, Belle—an encounter believed to be a typical disagreement over food. She slipped on a log inside the enclosure, which is designed to simulate a natural habitat. Due to her age and the uneven terrain, Ruth was unable to get up on her own.
Zoo staff acted quickly, using a front-end loader to help the multi-ton elephant back on her feet. Although they routinely train with the Milwaukee Fire Department’s Heavy Urban Rescue Team for such situations, the loader was sufficient for this incident.

Once upright, Ruth walked back to her indoor habitat unassisted. Veterinarians report she is recovering well and is being monitored closely, including daily and overnight health checks. She’s resumed normal activities, including training sessions and time in the outdoor habitat.
All three elephants at the Milwaukee County Zoo—Ruth, Belle, and another named Brittany—are considered geriatric. Ruth, now 43, has already surpassed the average lifespan of a female African savanna elephant by four years. Zoo officials note that caring for older animals requires additional planning due to increased health concerns and limited mobility.

The zoo emphasized that such interactions between elephants are part of natural behavior, and the inclusion of logs in the enclosure plays an important role in their physical health.
African elephants are listed as Endangered, with only an estimated 415,000 remaining in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund.
Ruth and her companions remain on exhibit and can be seen daily at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
