The New York Yankees observed a moment of silence before their game against the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in honor of Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated earlier that day.

Kirk, 31, was the founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA and a well-known presence on college campuses. He was also a husband and father of two. The Yankees posted a tribute on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, acknowledging Kirk’s impact.

The assassination occurred at Utah Valley University, where Kirk was speaking as part of his “American Comeback Tour.”

President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend Thursday night’s Yankees game in the Bronx, which also marks the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. In a video posted to Truth Social, Trump expressed outrage over Kirk’s killing, calling it a “heinous assassination.”

“To my great fellow Americans, I am filled with grief and anger at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk on a college campus in Utah,” Trump said, speaking from behind the Resolute Desk. He described the incident as a “dark moment for America” and blamed “radical left” rhetoric for fueling hostility toward conservative figures like Kirk.

In anticipation of Trump’s appearance, the Yankees have issued a warning to fans about increased security. “Ticketed guests are strongly urged to arrive as early as possible and should budget extra time for entry due to enhanced security measures at all Yankee Stadium gates and entrances,” the team wrote on X.

This will be the final game of the Yankees’ three-game series against the Tigers. Detroit has dominated the series so far, outscoring New York 23-3 in the first two matchups.

Trump’s appearance at Sunday’s U.S. Open final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner previously caused a 30-minute delay to the start of the match.
