Following the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is facing backlash for her comments during a recent interview.
Kirk was fatally shot during a public Q&A session on the university’s campus in Orem, Utah. Footage from the event captured a single gunshot that struck him in the neck while he was addressing students under a pop-up tent.
During an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan, Omar discussed Kirk’s controversial legacy and statements. She referenced past remarks he had made, including his stance on gun rights, his comments on George Floyd’s death, and his criticism of Juneteenth.

“He was someone who once said, ‘Guns save lives’ after a school shooting,” Omar said. “He debated and downplayed George Floyd’s death and questioned the significance of Juneteenth.”
Hasan added that Kirk had previously referred to George Floyd in disparaging terms. Omar agreed, saying, “There’s nothing more disturbing than pretending his words and actions have not been documented over the past decade.”
Critics have accused Omar of being insensitive in the wake of Kirk’s death, pointing to her tone and demeanor during the interview. Supporters argue she was expressing long-standing political and moral disagreements with Kirk’s views and public statements.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the shooting.
