President Trump orders flags throughout the United States lowered for Charlie Kirk
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump has ordered all U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff through Sunday evening in honor of Charlie Kirk, a conservative political activist who was fatally shot while speaking at an event on a Utah university campus.
“In honor of Charlie Kirk, a truly Great American Patriot, I am ordering all American Flags throughout the United States lowered to Half Mast until Sunday evening at 6 P.M.,” Trump announced on his Truth Social platform.
Flags were already scheduled to be lowered on Thursday, Sept. 11, in observance of Patriot Day, a federal day of remembrance for the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.
Trump confirmed Kirk’s death Wednesday morning on social media, describing him as “Great, and even Legendary,” and praising his connection with young Americans. “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie,” Trump wrote.
Kirk, 31, was shot during a Turning Point USA event held at Utah Valley University in Orem. According to police, he was addressing a question about mass shootings and gun violence when a single gunshot struck him in the neck. The suspect remains at large, and authorities are continuing their investigation.
Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 at the age of 18 and grew the organization into a major force in conservative youth politics. He also served as an aide to Donald Trump Jr. during the 2016 presidential campaign and was a frequent media commentator supporting former President Trump’s policies.
The shooting has reignited concerns about political violence in the U.S., drawing bipartisan condemnation. Lawmakers from both parties offered condolences and expressed support for Kirk’s family.
Charlie Kirk is survived by his wife and two young children.
