The Israeli military on Tuesday morning ordered a full evacuation of Gaza City, signaling an imminent and expanded ground operation in the northern part of the territory, according to the Associated Press. This marks the first call for a complete evacuation of the city in the current phase of the conflict.
Defense Minister Israel Katz announced that Israeli forces have already demolished 30 high-rise buildings in Gaza, which Israel claims were being used by Hamas for military operations. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Israel plans to destroy at least 50 so-called “towers of terror” allegedly used by Hamas. “Our forces are gathering and getting ready to enter Gaza City,” Netanyahu said, warning civilians: “You have been warned — leave immediately.”
In recent days, the Israeli military has increased its airstrikes and targeted demolitions of high-rise buildings, asserting that Hamas has embedded surveillance and command infrastructure within them. The military is urging residents to flee toward a designated humanitarian zone in southern Gaza, ahead of what it describes as a decisive phase to dismantle what it believes is Hamas’ last major stronghold.
Despite these warnings, only a small percentage of Gaza City’s estimated 1 million residents have evacuated so far.
On Monday, Katz delivered a stark warning: “A mighty hurricane will hit the skies of Gaza City today, and the roofs of the terror towers will shake.” He added: “This is a final warning to the murderers and rapists of Hamas in Gaza and in the luxury hotels abroad: Release the hostages and lay down your weapons — or Gaza will be destroyed, and you will be annihilated.”
