On Thursday, House Speaker Mike Johnson defended President Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case, telling reporters that Trump was an “FBI informant” who worked to help dismantle Epstein’s sex trafficking ring.

The controversy began when CNN’s Manu Raju questioned Johnson about Trump’s use of the word “hoax” to describe the Epstein files. Johnson argued that Trump was referring specifically to what he believes is a political attack orchestrated by Democrats, rather than dismissing the heinous crimes Epstein was accused of.

Trump has previously called the Epstein case a “hoax,” claiming it’s a narrative pushed by Democrats and certain Republicans who are trying to damage his reputation. “It’s perpetrated by the Democrats and some foolish Republicans who fall into their trap,” Trump has said, adding that any suggestion of more to the story is “bullsh*t.”

Johnson echoed this sentiment, asserting that Trump was not trivializing Epstein’s actions, but rather condemning the political motives behind the investigation. “What he’s talking about is the Democrats who have impure motives. If they were truly concerned, why didn’t they act during the Biden administration, when the DOJ had access to all the records?” Johnson said. “They’re just trying to throw mud at him.”

Johnson also made it clear that Trump is “horrified” by the abuse Epstein allegedly inflicted on his victims. “He has great sympathy for the women who have suffered these unspeakable harms,” Johnson said. He also reiterated that Trump had distanced himself from Epstein, even kicking him out of his Mar-a-Lago estate years ago. “The President knows that Epstein was an evil person, and he wanted nothing to do with him.”

The Speaker also suggested that Trump would likely meet with the victims of Epstein’s crimes. “He has a compassionate heart,” Johnson said. “He hates the fact that these women suffered wrongs. He hates what Epstein did.”

These comments came just one day after victims of Epstein’s trafficking ring spoke out during a press conference on Capitol Hill. At the press conference, attorney Brad Edwards revealed that Trump had helped him in 2009 with his investigation into Epstein. “He didn’t think it was a hoax then,” Edwards said. “He got on the phone and provided information that helped our investigation.”

Edwards expressed disappointment with Trump’s shift in stance on the Epstein case. “I don’t understand how this is even up for debate,” Edwards said. “How do you not stand behind these women after you’ve heard their stories?”

While some victims have named Trump in connection with Epstein, none have claimed to have seen the former president with Epstein or involved in any illegal activity. One victim, Chauntee Davies, recalled that Epstein “bragged” about his powerful connections, including Trump, but did not allege any direct involvement between the two men.

Davies also shared that she had once traveled to Africa with former President Bill Clinton while being abused by Epstein, highlighting the complex web of influential figures connected to Epstein’s alleged crimes.

As the debate continues, lawmakers are pushing forward with efforts to force the Department of Justice to release all files related to Epstein, a move supported by many of the victims seeking justice.
