A British Columbia woman is recovering in the hospital after plunging 60 feet onto jagged rocks in a desperate attempt to save her dog — and against all odds, both she and her pup survived.
Margaux Cohen, 36, was hiking with her dog Zion and two friends on August 24 near Tricouni Peak when the group lost the trail and came up against a steep rock wall, according to The Squamish Chief.
As they tried to scale the obstacle, Zion — a pit bull mix — slipped and began sliding down the mountainside. Without thinking, Cohen grabbed his harness to stop him.
“I had this instinct to just grab his harness,” Cohen said from her hospital bed in North Vancouver. “But I didn’t realize that because of his weight, I was going to fall too.”
Cohen tumbled repeatedly down the rocky slope, striking her face and suffering serious injuries during the terrifying fall. “I probably fell 20 feet, hit my face on the rocks, and then fell again and again,” she recalled.

She remained conscious throughout the ordeal. When the fall finally stopped, she looked down at her right leg and realized it was severely broken. “It was not in the right shape,” she said. “I just screamed.”
Her friends quickly called for help, and rescue crews were dispatched. But amid the pain and panic, Cohen found one bright spot: Zion had survived and was calmly sitting next to her, tail wagging despite an injured paw.
“My dog was just sitting next to me, wagging his tail like nothing happened — like he just had the time of his life,” she said.

More than two hours later, Cohen and Zion were airlifted to safety in intense heat. She is now recovering in the hospital after undergoing one surgery on her leg, with more likely to come, according to a GoFundMe page set up to support her.
Despite the trauma, Cohen remains grateful to her friends and the search-and-rescue team that saved her and her dog.
“I just believe that someone was watching over me that day,” she told Global News.
