Mayor Frey Wept at Career Criminal George Floyd’s Funeral, Defended Catholic School Shooter

Footage widely circulated on social media captured Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey pausing in front of George Floyd’s casket during a 2020 memorial service. In the video, Frey is seen kneeling, visibly emotional, and appearing to whisper a few words.

Critics have contrasted this moment of public grief with the mayor’s more recent response to the August 27, 2025, school shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. The attack left two children dead and 17 others injured. Authorities identified the shooter as Robin Westman, who identified as transgender. During a subsequent press conference, Frey focused on countering what he described as anti-trans rhetoric and emphasized support for the transgender community, drawing criticism from some who felt the remarks overlooked the gravity of the attack on the Catholic school.

The FBI and other agencies are investigating the incident as both a hate crime and a case of domestic terrorism. According to law enforcement, Westman left behind a manifesto and a series of online postings that expressed hostility toward Christians, Jews, and various other groups. Materials recovered from the scene and from Westman’s digital footprint reportedly included references to previous mass shooters and extremist ideologies. Weapons and other items were allegedly inscribed with hateful slogans, antisemitic messages, and references to past mass killings.

In a 20-minute video reportedly recorded before the attack, Westman expressed a desire to commit violence, and the manifesto detailed a long history of mental health struggles, suicidal thoughts, and an obsession with school shootings. U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson said, “The shooter expressed hate toward almost every group imaginable,” adding that the individual seemed to glorify other mass killers.

Some public commentators and faith leaders have questioned the mayor’s focus during the aftermath of the tragedy, arguing that the attention should have remained on the victims and their families. They also pointed to broader concerns about untreated mental illness, particularly within vulnerable populations.

Mental health professionals have noted that individuals identifying as transgender experience significantly higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation compared to the general population. While gender-affirming care is widely supported by many medical organizations, critics argue that more emphasis should be placed on long-term psychological support and safety assessments.

The Annunciation Catholic School shooting has reignited debates about mental health, gun violence, and the responsibilities of public officials in responding to mass tragedies. Investigations are ongoing.
