21 Dogs Die in One Night at Boarding Facility
Tragedy struck a dog boarding facility in upstate New York over the weekend, leaving families grieving the unexpected loss of their pets. Authorities confirmed that 21 dogs died overnight at Anastasia’s Acres, a boarding facility in Argyle, roughly 45 miles north of Albany.
“It’s like losing a child,” said Robert and Leah Brown, whose 8-month-old puppy, Rex, was among the animals found dead on Sunday. The couple had dropped Rex off Saturday morning before heading to New Hampshire for the weekend. They were expecting a photo update from the facility the next day — but instead received a call from authorities informing them of the tragedy.
While the Washington County Sheriff’s Office has not officially confirmed the cause of death, the Browns said investigators told them the facility’s central air system had malfunctioned overnight, leading to a fatal drop in oxygen levels. Only one dog survived and was later deemed healthy.
Another pet owner, 12-year-old Hannah Elmore, lost her 3-year-old dog, Piglet, who was scheduled to be picked up on Sunday. “I just broke down immediately,” she told WRGB, adding that an apology from the facility’s owner “would mean a lot to me.”
Anastasia’s Acres has been closed indefinitely while authorities continue their investigation.
