National Guard Troops in DC Will Carry Firearms
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has authorized National Guard troops deployed in Washington, DC, to carry firearms, according to the Associated Press. The Pentagon did not provide additional details or explain the reasoning behind the decision. The order, issued Friday, applies to members of the DC National Guard activated by President Trump, as well as troops sent from six other states, reports the Washington Post.
Unclear Mission Changes
It remains uncertain whether the Guard’s mission in the capital is shifting. Thus far, National Guard troops have not been directly involved in law enforcement duties. Instead, they have focused on protecting federal landmarks—including the National Mall and Union Station—and assisting with crowd control.
Trump Praises Results
President Trump has claimed that the security presence has significantly improved conditions in the city. “It’s a miracle what’s happened,” he told reporters Friday, describing DC as having been “a hell hole” prior to the deployment. He hinted that the increased presence of federal forces could be extended. “The big question is how long do we stay?” he said. “Because if we stay, we want to make sure it doesn’t come back. So we have to take care of these criminals and get them out.”
Plans for City Improvements
The president also announced plans to request $2 billion from Congress to revitalize Washington’s infrastructure and appearance. Proposed improvements include resurfacing roads, updating streetlights, and even upgrading public green spaces. He previously remarked that he wants the grass to resemble that of one of his golf courses. “It’s going to be safe, and it’s going to be beautified,” Trump said.
