Detroit Border Protection Agents Seize 52 lbs of Monkey Meat from Passenger Traveling from Africa
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at Detroit Metropolitan Airport recently confiscated 52 pounds of monkey meat from a traveler arriving from Central Africa.
According to Fox 2 Detroit, the passenger was initially stopped after officials discovered an unidentified type of meat in his luggage. Upon questioning, the traveler — who had arrived from Gabon — claimed the meat was antelope. However, further inspection revealed it to be monkey meat, possibly from a sun-tailed monkey species.

Although the man was not arrested, CBP issued him a $300 fine for the illegal importation.
This incident marks the second recent case of bushmeat being intercepted at the airport. In a separate event, authorities also seized 11 pounds of rodent meat from a passenger traveling from Togo, West Africa.

CBP officials note that seizures involving primate meat are extremely rare. However, they also stress the serious public health risks associated with bushmeat, which can carry dangerous communicable diseases transmissible to humans.
