Comey Trashes President Trump in 5-Minute Rant, Says Taylor Swift Helps Him Cope with Trump
Former FBI Director James Comey took to his Substack this week to reflect on current politics and pop culture, delivering pointed criticism of former President Donald Trump while praising singer Taylor Swift as a source of personal inspiration.
In a five-minute video message, Comey described feeling disheartened by Trump’s continued influence, likening his presence in public life to a “bad dream.” Rather than dwell solely on politics, Comey used the post to highlight Swift’s music and public persona as a positive influence on his family—and a contrast to the tone he sees in contemporary political discourse.
“I’ve been a fan of Taylor Swift for 15 years,” Comey said, noting that he’s attended multiple concerts and participates in a Swift-themed group chat with his family. “Her music has been the soundtrack of my family’s life.”

Comey praised Swift not just for her music but for her ability to remain composed and gracious in the face of public criticism. Referencing recent comments reportedly made by Trump about Swift, Comey contrasted her calm professionalism with what he described as the “coarseness and ugliness” that he sees in much of today’s political rhetoric.
He also cited Swift’s advice on managing energy and dealing with negativity, connecting it to his broader message about resisting the urge to respond to political hostility in kind. “We need to stand up to jerks and defend what matters,” Comey said. “But we have to try to do that without becoming like them.”
Comey concluded by quoting Swift’s lyrics from her song “Mean,” thanking her for her example and encouraging others to resist the “cycle” of negativity.
