VIDEO: 120+ Cars Broken Into in Minnepolis in One Night

Minneapolis police say at least 125 vehicles were broken into overnight, most through smashed windows, as the city continues to grapple with a surge in car break-ins. Investigators are still searching for suspects and working to determine if the incidents are connected.

One of the areas hardest hit late Monday into early Tuesday was northeast Minneapolis, near Marshall Street and Broadway Avenue. Cell phone video obtained by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS captured what appeared to be a coordinated effort, with individuals moving methodically from car to car, breaking windows and rifling through interiors in search of valuables.

“It made me cry,” said Brooke Tuff, whose brand-new SUV was targeted. “It was really, really a punch to the gut watching someone inside my vehicle. It makes me scared to even come out here at night sometimes.”

Tuff said recent break-ins had prompted her to remove valuables from her car — a small comfort after the damage.

Her neighbor, Teddie Hoppmann, also had their car broken into.

“This has happened before already,” Hoppmann said. “So once I saw more glass and some cops hanging around, I was like, ‘ope.’ Hopefully they’ll catch some people and put a stop to it.”

The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) confirmed the incidents, saying all occurred between August 11 and August 12 in groupings — multiple vehicles on the same block damaged within a short time. The break-ins were concentrated in the city’s 2nd and 5th precincts.

So far, no arrests have been made, but investigators are reviewing evidence and pursuing leads. Crime analysts are also working with neighboring jurisdictions to identify patterns and possible connections to similar incidents in other cities.

In a written statement, MPD said they’ve increased patrols in the affected areas but did not specify how many officers are involved or how frequently they’re present. The department urged residents to report any suspicious activity immediately, emphasizing that prompt 911 calls can lead to quick arrests.

MPD also reminded the public:

  • If your car was recently damaged or broken into, report it via 911, 311, in person at your precinct, or through the city’s online reporting system.

  • If you see multiple damaged cars in one area, call 911 and request officer response.

  • Review home security or doorbell camera footage for any suspicious activity and share relevant video with police.

Residents can also register their security cameras with the city to help officers quickly locate footage in the event of future crimes.

To reduce your risk of break-ins, police recommend:

  • Always park in well-lit, busy areas.

  • Take your keys and valuables with you.

  • Don’t leave items like phones, bags, or electronics in plain sight.

  • Report any suspicious behavior near vehicles to 911, including detailed descriptions of individuals, vehicles, and their direction of travel.

MPD continues to encourage community involvement and vigilance as they work to stop this ongoing wave of vehicle theft and vandalism.
