Oklahoma starts giving tests to teachers from NY and Calif. to weed out ‘woke indoctrinators’
Educators from states like New York and California will now face an additional hurdle before teaching in Oklahoma classrooms: a new test designed to screen for what officials describe as “woke indoctrination.”
Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters announced the new requirement on Friday, stating that incoming teachers from select liberal-leaning states must pass a multiple-choice exam addressing topics such as biological sex, American civics, and the role of Christianity in U.S. history.
“Here in Oklahoma, our academics are going to be grounded in fact,” Walters told The New York Post. “We’ve seen states like New York and California go so radical with gender theory and Marxist indoctrination, they are warping the minds of young people. We need our teachers to agree not to be woke indoctrinators in the classroom.”
The 50-question assessment was developed in partnership with PragerU, a conservative media organization. According to CNN, passing the test is now required for incoming teachers from New York and California seeking licensure in Oklahoma. Officials have indicated that educators from up to eight additional states may soon be subject to the same screening.
Sample questions from the test include:
-

Walters said the measure is part of a broader effort to promote traditional education standards and American patriotism.
“We’re also going to be teaching the foundations of American history so we can continue to be the greatest country in the world,” he told The Post. “You’re not going to lie to kids about the influence Christianity had on American history. We want you to teach history appropriately.”
The new testing requirement comes as Oklahoma continues to see an influx of out-of-state teachers. A signing bonus program recently attracted about 500 educators to the state, but Walters says he’s concerned about the ideological leanings of some applicants.
“We’ve begun to be concerned with what we’re seeing from teachers moving from blue states,” Walters said.
While Walters didn’t provide a precise number of applicants from New York and California, a spokesperson told CNN the group is “fairly large.”
Walters, a vocal conservative, has championed several controversial education initiatives, including a policy requiring the Bible to be taught as a historical document in public schools. The move drew praise from former President Donald Trump.
