Hillary: I’ll Nominate Trump for a Nobel if He Pulls This Off

As the Alaska summit approaches, former President Donald Trump has received surprising words of support from an unlikely source—Hillary Clinton. During an appearance on the Raging Moderates podcast hosted by Fox News’ Jessica Tarlov, Clinton said she would consider nominating Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize if he successfully negotiates peace between Russia and Ukraine.

“Honestly, if he could bring about the end to this terrible war—if he could end it without forcing Ukraine to give up its territory to the aggressor—and really stand up to Putin, something we haven’t seen, but maybe this is the opportunity… if President Trump were the architect of that, I’d nominate him for a Nobel Peace Prize,” Clinton said, according to Mediaite. “My goal here is to not allow capitulation to Putin.”

Such a diplomatic breakthrough would be significant, as Russian President Vladimir Putin has shown no intention of relinquishing control over roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory currently occupied by his forces.

Trump has openly expressed interest in receiving the prestigious prize. Last month, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told NBC News that Trump has “brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his six months in office,” adding that “it’s well past time that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.”

When Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre visited the White House in April, a reporter asked about Trump’s chances. Støre clarified that his government has no influence over Nobel selections, which are made independently in Norway. Trump, however, welcomed the question, saying, “I like that question,” NBC noted.

Meanwhile, Reuters reports that during a phone call with Norway’s finance minister last month—ostensibly about trade tariffs—Trump also raised the topic of the Nobel Prize. According to Dagens Næringsliv, the call may have been as much about the prize as it was about tariffs.
