Illinois Governor Vows to Protect Texas Democrats

Texas Democrats who fled the state to block a vote on redrawing congressional districts are now facing serious consequences, including possible arrest, extradition, and expulsion from the Texas House.

The Walkout:
More than 50 Democratic lawmakers left Texas during a special legislative session to deny Republicans the quorum needed to pass a redistricting bill. Democrats argue the proposed map changes—pushed at the request of former President Trump, according to NBC News—are a partisan effort to give the GOP five additional congressional seats.

Governor’s Warning:
Governor Greg Abbott has threatened to have the lawmakers expelled if they don’t return by Monday afternoon, per Axios. “This truancy ends now,” Abbott said, citing legal grounds for his plan—a move expected to face court challenges.

Attorney General’s Statement:
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said the state will “hunt down” the absent lawmakers, insisting they should be “found, arrested, and brought back to the Capitol immediately.” However, since this is a state—not federal—issue, enforcement could prove difficult.

Democrats Find Refuge in Blue States:
Many lawmakers traveled to Illinois, where Governor JB Pritzker pledged to shield them. “It’s Ken Paxton who doesn’t follow the law,” Pritzker said, calling the redistricting effort illegal. Others headed to New York and Massachusetts.

Likely Outcome:
While the walkout stalls the vote, it’s unlikely to stop redistricting entirely. As The New York Times notes, similar past efforts have delayed—but not blocked—Republican legislative goals in Texas.
