Understanding the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act

On May 19th I published the following article, which appeared to not be received well with some folks. Some expressed their feelings that law enforcement officers are no better than they are and if law enforcement officers, active and retired, were permitted to carry a firearm anywhere in the United States, so should they. There were even some disparaging comments that police officers are under educated and not well trained. While I agree that some in the profession would probably be better suited hanging off the back of a garbage truck, as with any profession there are good and bad and when they are detected, they are removed.

However, each state sets their own training requirements for law enforcement officers. Under the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act, requirements are set by the federal government in order for active and retired law enforcement officers, whether they be municipal, county, state, or federal, which includes military.

This doesn’t mean a police officer from Alabama is also a police officer in New York and a retired police officer is just that, retired.

In regard to non private citizens, at the present time all 50 states have laws in place which allow qualified private citizens to carry concealed handguns. There are currently 29 states that don’t even require an individual to have a permit to carry a firearm, if they aren’t prohibited from doing so by state or federal law.

While the majority of firearm owners are safe and proficient, it is concerning the number of people who don’t know the difference between a revolver and a semi automatic or who have never fired a pistol are now carrying one. There is also great liability with carrying a firearm.

Some states have concealed carry reciprocity which means if you are permitted to carry in your home state, you can carry in the state that has reciprocity. Unfortunately, there are some states, such as California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York that do not honor concealed carry permits from any other state. Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York are no-issue states for concealed carry permits.
