More than 1.5 million pounds of meat and poultry have been recalled because they may have been affected by a temperature issue during storage.

The Kayem Foods Inc. voluntary recall affects hot dogs, sausages, bacon, and deli meats sold across the country under brand names like Kayem, Al Fresco, McKenzie, Triple M, Deutschmacher, Jordan’s, and more.

In total, the company is recalling “approximately 1,584,361 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products because they may have experienced temperature abuse during storage,” according to a recall announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The products were shipped to grocery stores and foodservice locations across the U.S. and in Hong Kong, the FSIS says.

People who’ve purchased any of the recalled products should not eat them, the company urges.

“Our business depends on providing consumers with safe food of the highest quality,” Matt Monkiewicz, Kayem Foods President and CEO, said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, we are undertaking this voluntary recall.”

“We take food safety very seriously and apologize to our valued consumers. Our management team takes full responsibility. We have learned from and corrected the issue and will not allow this to happen again,” the statement continued.

Why Are the Meat and Poultry Products Being Recalled?

Kayem Foods is recalling the meat and poultry due to a temperature issue that occurred during storage.

The products are being recalled “due to the recent discovery of a cooling system malfunction at one of the company’s warehouses that resulted in storage temperature deviations,” the company explained in a statement.

The issue was discovered after a retail customer complained of “warm product temperatures” at the point of delivery on Oct. 1, the FSIS says. “The establishment investigated and determined that they stored various RTE meat and poultry products in a warehouse cooler that experienced temperature deviations.”

There have been no confirmed reports of illness related to eating any of the recalled products, the FSIS notes.

What to Do If You Purchased Recalled Products

If you purchased any of the recalled hotdogs, deli meats or other products, you should not eat them.

Instead, dispose of them or return them to the place where you purchased them, the FSIS says. Additionally, you can contact Kayem Foods at the contact information on its website.
