Authorities in Michigan are investigating a disturbing series of wildlife deaths after five bald eagles were discovered dead over a two week period in the Upper Peninsula.
The birds, all protected under state and federal law, were found between April 3 and April 17 in the Garden Peninsula area, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Officials say their findings rule out natural causes, predators, and vehicle strikes, raising concerns that the deaths were the result of unlawful activity.
The DNR has asked the public to come forward with any information that could help identify those responsible. A reward may be offered for tips that lead to an arrest in what officials have described as a troubling case.

Bald eagles are safeguarded by strict legal protections, and harming them can bring serious consequences. Under federal law, a first offense can carry a fine of up to 100,000 dollars and a potential one year prison sentence, with harsher penalties for repeat violations. Michigan law also imposes penalties, including misdemeanor charges, fines ranging from 100 to 1000 dollars per bird, and a required reimbursement of 1,500 dollars for each eagle.

The investigation will involve federal wildlife officials as well as local tribal authorities.
