Four Brits Busted Smuggling Themselves Into Maine – But There’s a Catch

For years, when Americans talk about illegal immigration into the United States, the focus has usually been on the southern border. The border with Mexico remains a major concern and accounts for most attempts by people from around the world to enter the country illegally.

However, the northern border also sees illegal crossings. One recent case involved four British nationals who were caught attempting to cross from Canada into the U.S. state of Maine on April 3. According to federal court documents, the group even recorded their entry onto U.S. soil using a GoPro camera and GPS.

The four men were identified as Ali Mohammed Ali Abdullah, Hameed Mohammed Nagi, Ibrahim Ayyub Khan, and Mohammed Sultan Saleh.

According to an affidavit filed April 7 in U.S. District Court for the District of Maine by U.S. Border Patrol Agent Scott Hanton, Border Patrol agents apprehended the men in a remote wooded area of Somerset County after they crossed illegally from Canada.

Video recorded during the crossing reportedly shows Saleh announcing that the group had reached American territory. As they moved through dense forest a few hundred yards from the St. Zacharie Port of Entry in northwestern Somerset County, Saleh stated that they were now on U.S. soil while showing GPS coordinates on his phone. Another man asked if they had successfully crossed, and Saleh confirmed that they had.

Authorities say the group was spotted shortly before their arrest by two maple sugar workers traveling toward Canada. The workers noticed four men walking south along the Golden Road near mile marker 90, an unusual sight in an area rarely traveled by pedestrians.

The Golden Road is a 96-mile private logging road running from Millinocket to the Quebec border. The area is extremely remote, with very little traffic and almost no cell service.

The workers reported the sighting to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer at the St. Zacharie Port of Entry around 9:15 a.m. Their report prompted Border Patrol agents to search the area, leading to the apprehension of the four men.

The British nationals now face federal charges related to illegally entering the United States and are expected to appear before a judge in federal court.
