During a youth softball game in Dalton, Georgia, an altercation erupted when coaches were exchanging handshakes after the match, leading to one coach allegedly attacking another.

Meredith Haskew Grant was taken into custody by the Dalton Police Department on Saturday and faces misdemeanor battery charges, according to the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office. She was processed at the Whitfield County Jail and released on bond the same day.

The incident took place at Heritage Point Regional Park, where families had gathered to watch the GA Fury Platinum Harris face off against the Wreckers Fastpitch in an 8-and-under game. After the final out, coaches and players gathered at the pitcher’s mound to shake hands, a standard post-game tradition, when the confrontation occurred.

Video footage obtained by NBC affiliate WRCB in Chattanooga shows Grant reportedly grabbing another coach by the hair, pulling her down, and striking her multiple times while other adults intervened to separate them.

Police reports indicate that Grant claimed the opposing team had made unsportsmanlike remarks toward her daughter and that one of the coaches had confronted her aggressively. Authorities reviewing the video determined that Grant appeared to initiate the attack.

The coach who was struck told WRCB, “I’m just going to let the video speak to her character. At the end of the day, my coaching staff and myself know the truth. The video doesn’t lie.”

Following the incident, Grant has been prohibited from participating in any future youth softball tournaments.

Dalton is situated in northwest Georgia, roughly 30 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
