WATCH: Major Explosion Under Panama Canal’s Bridge of the Americas Kills at Least One – Investigation Under Way
The Panama Canal remains a critical waterway in the Western Hemisphere, and concerns persist over foreign interference.
Two days after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized China for detaining dozens of Panama-flagged vessels, a major explosion beneath a bridge near the Canal has raised fears of potential sabotage.
According to the New York Post:
“Footage shows a fuel tanker erupting in flames under a bridge near the Panama Canal, with the fireball nearly engulfing nearby traffic. Bright orange flames came dangerously close to vehicles in Panama City on Monday. One person died in the massive blaze.”

Panamanian authorities closed the bridge while firefighters responded to the scene and engineers assessed structural damage.
The Associated Press reported that the blast occurred around 4 p.m. on Panama’s Bridge of the Americas, which connects the capital with the airport and several western suburbs. Security camera footage captured a massive fireball rising toward the bridge deck. Several cars were present during the explosion, but their occupants were unharmed.
Authorities confirmed that one fuel truck worker died, and two firefighters were injured while fighting the fire. Engineers cautioned that the fire may have compromised the integrity of the decades-old bridge, a vital connection for Panama City and surrounding areas.
