Legendary samurai sword is stolen from California dojo by brazen bike bandit

A California martial arts school is grappling with the theft of a rare Japanese samurai sword after a thief on a bicycle smashed through its window in the early hours of the morning.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. last Saturday at the Zen Martial Arts Center in East Sacramento. Surveillance footage from a nearby business captures the cyclist surveying the dojo before breaking the front window with rocks to gain entry on March 28.

The burglary went down around 3 a.m. at the Zen Martial Arts Center in East Sacramento.

Instead of targeting cash or electronics, the burglar went straight for a historic treasure: a 17th-century wakizashi sword that has been in the same family for more than 400 years.

“The sword belonged to one of our long-time students,” explained dojo owner Mike Oliver. “The family entrusted it to us for display. In Japan, wakizashi swords are considered cultural heritage and cannot be exported, which makes it extremely special.”

The heirloom, a shorter companion to the traditional katana, held deep significance for the George family. It originally belonged to their ancestor, Chitoshi Yanaga, and was intended as a gift for the family’s son once he earned his black belt. Estimates place the sword’s value between $4,000 and $6,000.

“It actually belonged to a student, a long-time student,” Mike Oliver, the dojo’s owner, told local outlets.

The Zen Martial Arts Center has served the East Sacramento community since 2009, and now both the dojo and the George family are asking local antique dealers, pawn shops, and neighbors to be on the lookout for the stolen artifact.

They have partnered with Sacramento Valley Crimestoppers and are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of the sword and the arrest of the thief.
