A United Airlines flight departing from San Francisco for Papeete in French Polynesia encountered turbulence over the Pacific Ocean on Sunday that left a crew member seriously injured, though none of the passengers were harmed.
According to United, Flight 115 experienced what the airline described as moderate turbulence during the trip. The disturbance injured a flight attendant, while all 165 passengers on board remained safe. The aircraft, a Boeing 787-9, continued to its destination and landed without incident in Papeete on the island of Tahiti. Emergency medical personnel were waiting when the plane arrived.
The National Transportation Safety Board has begun reviewing the event and categorized it as a turbulence-related incident. Authorities have not provided additional information about the injured flight attendant’s condition.
Federal Aviation Administration data shows that injuries caused by turbulence are relatively rare. When they do occur, flight attendants are most often affected because they are frequently on their feet or moving through the cabin when turbulence happens.
