Amazon Hits 3rd-Party Sellers With a 3.5% Surcharge

Amazon will begin charging a temporary 3.5% fee on fuel and logistics for third-party sellers using its platform, citing higher operating costs following the onset of the war in Iran. The surcharge will take effect April 17 for many sellers who rely on Amazon’s fulfillment services, the company confirmed in a statement to the AP on Thursday.
“Rising fuel and logistics costs have impacted operations across the industry,” Amazon said, noting that it has absorbed these expenses up to now. However, like other major carriers, Amazon said it implements temporary surcharges when costs remain high, though the company emphasized that its fee is significantly lower than those charged by competitors. “We remain committed to supporting our selling partners and ensuring a wide selection of products at low prices for customers,” the statement added.
The new fee will affect U.S. and Canadian sellers using Fulfillment by Amazon. Starting May 2, it will also apply to sellers using Buy with Prime and Multi-Channel Fulfillment services.
Amazon joins other shipping providers introducing additional charges to offset rising energy costs amid the Iran war. United Parcel Service and FedEx have already raised their fuel surcharges. The United States Postal Service recently announced an 8% fuel surcharge for packages shipped from April 26, which will remain in effect until January 17, 2027.
