Since the United States detained Nicolás Maduro and President Donald J. Trump launched a regional security initiative called the “Shield of the Americas,” attention in Latin America has shifted to Cuba.
Decades of centralized economic control have left Cuba facing severe shortages and widespread hardship. The government’s hold has weakened as the economy struggles, and the island now confronts mounting economic and social pressure. The Trump administration has increased diplomatic and economic measures against Havana, and discussions between the two governments are reportedly underway.

In this context, Sandro Castro, a grandson of Cuba’s late revolutionary leader Fidel Castro and a well-known social media figure, recently spoke publicly about conditions on the island. In an interview from Havana, he criticized current Cuban leadership and said that many people on the island would prefer an economic system based on open markets rather than state control. He described daily life in Cuba as difficult and argued that economic changes are necessary.

Castro also expressed support for some form of negotiated understanding between Cuban authorities and the United States, suggesting that most residents want greater economic freedom and opportunities.
