A Delta Air Lines flight leaving São Paulo for the United States was forced to turn back and make an emergency landing shortly after takeoff when one of its engines caught fire.
Delta Flight DL104 had departed from São Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport and was headed to Atlanta with 272 passengers and 14 crew members on board. Moments after the aircraft lifted off the runway, a mechanical problem developed in the jet’s left engine.
Video shared online showed sparks and flames coming from beneath the wing as the plane was climbing, alarming passengers on board.
Delta Air Lines Airbus A330-300 (N813NW) suffered a catastrophic left engine failure just after rotation from São Paulo-Guarulhos on March 29. Explosions and flames trailed the aircraft, with debris sparking a brush fire near the runway.

Because of the engine issue, the crew returned the aircraft to the airport, where it landed safely. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.
After the plane arrived back at the airport, passengers were transported by bus from the aircraft to the terminal.
Delta said its teams were working to arrange alternate travel for customers so they could continue to their destinations. The airline added that the safety of its passengers and crew remains its top priority and apologized for the disruption to travelers’ plans.
