In Providence, Rhode Island, plans for a mural commemorating Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian legal immigrant who was killed by a repeat offender on a North Carolina train, have been halted following pressure from left-wing activists.
The mural, intended to honor Zarutska’s memory, was being painted on the exterior wall of The Dark Lady, a well-known LGBTQ+ nightclub downtown. Initially, the bar’s owners supported the tribute, but activists argued that the artwork could be interpreted as a “far-right” symbol.
Facing mounting pressure, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley, a Democrat, has now called for the mural’s removal. The project remains unfinished as city officials and community members debate both its purpose and funding.

In a statement, Mayor Smiley said: “The murder of the individual depicted in this mural was a devastating tragedy, but the intent behind similar murals can isolate rather than unite. I encourage our community to support local artists whose work brings us closer together rather than divides us.”
Artist Ian Gaudreau, who began painting the mural last week, told NBC 10 News that the project was never meant to be political. Visitors to the site over the weekend expressed similar views, emphasizing the need to focus on Zarutska and her story instead of the political debate surrounding the artwork.
The controversy has sparked criticism from some residents, who argue that the mayor’s labeling of the mural as divisive is inconsistent with the city’s response to other memorials, and reflects a reluctance to confront the role of policies they see as contributing to Zarutska’s death.
