Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared on Good Morning America Monday morning to discuss the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the objectives behind Operation Epic Fury. During the interview, host George Stephanopoulos repeatedly pressed Rubio with questions reflecting a common media narrative that the mission lacks clearly defined goals.
Before Rubio could fully explain the administration’s position, Stephanopoulos challenged him about comments President Donald Trump had posted on Truth Social earlier in the day. In that post, Trump said the United States was engaged in discussions with what he described as a “new and more reasonable” regime in Iran. He also warned that if those talks fail, the U.S. could target major Iranian infrastructure, including electric-generating facilities, oil wells, Kharg Island, and possibly desalination plants that have not yet been attacked.
Stephanopoulos suggested the statement signaled an expansion of the operation’s objectives and asked Rubio to respond.
Rubio said the president’s preference remains diplomacy and noted that early discussions and messages are already being exchanged, sometimes through intermediaries. He said negotiations would not be necessary if Iran had previously abandoned its nuclear ambitions and stopped supporting militant groups throughout the region.
According to Rubio, Iran’s government is tied to numerous armed groups operating across the Middle East, including the Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas, and Shiite militias in Iraq. He argued that these connections are a major source of instability and must be addressed. Rubio also warned that the Iranian leadership cannot be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, describing their ideology as dangerous and emphasizing that neighboring countries share those concerns.
Stephanopoulos then returned to Trump’s social media post, pressing Rubio for details about the “new and more reasonable regime” mentioned by the president. He asked whether the United States is directly communicating with individuals representing a different leadership group inside Iran.
Rubio declined to identify anyone involved, explaining that revealing such information could endanger those individuals. He acknowledged there appear to be internal divisions within Iran and said it would be positive if new leaders emerged who were willing to pursue a different path for the country.
Rubio added that Iran’s resources could significantly improve the lives of its citizens if they were used for economic development rather than funding militant organizations or weapons programs. He emphasized that the current clerical leadership remains the central problem, but said the United States would evaluate whether any new figures actually have the authority to change the country’s direction.

Stephanopoulos continued pressing for clarification about whether these contacts represent a real shift in power. Rubio responded that private diplomatic conversations often differ from public statements and that sensitive discussions are not typically disclosed. He said the United States will determine over time whether those communicating with American officials truly have influence inside Iran.
The interview concluded with a discussion about whether the conflict could broaden if diplomacy fails. Rubio rejected that characterization and said the mission has had clear goals from the start.
He outlined the four primary objectives of Operation Epic Fury: destroying Iran’s air force, eliminating its navy, severely reducing its missile-launching capability, and destroying facilities used to manufacture missiles and drones. Rubio said the purpose of these actions is to prevent Iran from building the military capacity needed to eventually obtain nuclear weapons.
Rubio added that the operation is progressing quickly and, in some areas, ahead of schedule. He said the administration expects the objectives to be achieved within weeks rather than months.
Shortly after Rubio listed those goals, the interview segment ended.
