Ontario Provincial Police officers stepped in to help an injured dog on Saturday afternoon after receiving a call about a distressed animal in Tay Township.

Officers from the Southern Georgian Bay detachment responded to Vasey Road, where a husky had wandered onto a property with its face covered in porcupine quills.

The person who had taken the dog in told officers they were unable to afford the veterinary treatment needed to remove the quills and care for the animal.

Working with animal control, the officers transported the dog to a 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic in Barrie so it could receive immediate medical attention. Animal welfare officials were also contacted and became involved in the case.

The dog has since received treatment and is now being placed in a new home.
