California Mission Burrito
At TNBD, we’re continuing our series featuring a recipe from a different U.S. state every day! Today’s stop is California, home of the iconic Mission Burrito.
The Mission Burrito is a generous, flavor-packed burrito known for its large size and hearty fillings. Traditionally, it starts with a soft, warm flour tortilla wrapped around rice, beans, meat (commonly carnitas, carne asada, or chicken), cheese, salsa, and fresh vegetables like guacamole, lettuce, and tomatoes. What sets the Mission Burrito apart is its emphasis on being fully wrapped and portable, yet large enough to be a meal in itself—perfect for lunch on the go or a satisfying dinner.
The Mission Burrito has its roots in San Francisco’s Mission District during the 1960s and 1970s, when Mexican-American taquerias began crafting oversized burritos to appeal to busy workers and hungry students. Inspired by traditional Mexican burritos from northern Mexico but larger and more ingredient-filled, these burritos quickly became a defining feature of California’s culinary landscape. The name “Mission” comes directly from the neighborhood where the style was popularized, linking the dish to a distinct cultural and geographic identity. Over time, the Mission Burrito spread across California and eventually the United States, influencing modern burrito styles nationwide.
Today, the Mission Burrito is more than just a meal—it’s a symbol of California’s vibrant Mexican-American heritage and its creative, fusion-driven food culture. From family-owned taquerias in the Mission District to chains and restaurants across the state, this hefty, flavor-packed burrito offers a delicious taste of California tradition in every bite.
