Trump: “Cuba’s Next By the Way But Pretend I Didn’t Say That Please… Cuba’s Next.”
At a summit in Miami Beach this past Friday, President Trump reiterated his warnings about possible action against Cuba. Speaking at the Future Investment Initiative Priority Summit, he linked Cuba to recent U.S. involvement in Venezuela and said the island nation could be targeted next.
While describing the U.S. operation in Venezuela — where Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro was captured by U.S. forces — the president told the audience that Cuba would be “next.” He initially made the remark somewhat jokingly, asking the press to “pretend I didn’t say that,” but then stated again that “Cuba’s next.”
The U.S. government has been increasing pressure on Cuban officials with a range of measures. The Department of Justice is reportedly preparing legal actions against members of Cuba’s leadership related to drug trafficking and violent crime. At the same time, the administration has taken steps to choke off Cuba’s access to oil by vowing to impose tariffs on any country that ships fuel to the island under an executive order signed last month. These actions are part of a broader effort to force political change in Havana.
In his Miami remarks, the president emphasized the strength he says the United States has built, including its military. He said that while his campaign stressed “peace through strength,” there are times when military force is necessary. He again declared that Cuba would be the next target after recent action in Venezuela.
The president also indicated continued enforcement of border security policies and deportations of individuals in the U.S. illegally.
In discussions with reporters outside the event, he suggested that developments involving Cuba could occur soon. He described Cuba as struggling and expressed belief that Cuban leaders might seek a deal rather than face harsher consequences. The president said that while talks are ongoing, the U.S. would focus on Iran before addressing Cuba.
