What was once ridiculed as an obvious “rug” is now quietly gaining popularity again. A report by Sarah Ann Harris in the Guardian explains that modern “hair systems”—partial hairpieces attached to the scalp and blended with a person’s natural hair—are attracting a wide range of users, from professionals like lawyers to well-known public figures who want an alternative to going bald or undergoing hair transplant surgery.
Today’s versions are far more advanced than the hairpieces many people remember from past decades. Instead of thick, easily noticeable toupees, newer designs use either real or synthetic hair attached to thin lace or skin-like bases. They can be customized in color and style to match a person’s natural hair and are secured so firmly that they hold up during everyday activities. Barber Thomas Robinson told Harris that some of his clients wear them while jet skiing, scuba diving, or working out regularly at the gym.
Harris says several factors are driving renewed interest. Social media plays a role, particularly through before-and-after “transformation” videos that showcase dramatic changes in appearance. At the same time, hair transplants remain expensive and often cannot produce the same level of fullness that a hair system can achieve.
Industry data suggests the trend is fairly recent. Aderans, a company whose subsidiary has been selling toupees since 1965, reported a 43 percent jump in male hair system purchases in 2025 compared with the year before. Robinson, who has been offering the systems for the past two years, says his customers typically pay around $800. With proper care, each piece can last about a year.
Many people who wear them say the impact on their self-confidence has been significant. According to Harris, several users described a major boost in how they feel about their appearance. Surprisingly, they also report that most people around them—including family members and coworkers—often have no idea they are wearing a hair system.
