Taco Bell makes unprecedented menu change – and you get to decide

Taco Bell is letting its most loyal customers help decide what comes next for the menu, inviting fans across the United States to vote on a new taco inspired by flavors from around the world.

The fast-food chain is asking fans to choose between two international menu items that have already proven popular overseas: the Kickin’ Chicken Taco from Thailand and the Butter Chicken Taco from India. The taco that receives the most votes will be added to Taco Bell menus nationwide for a limited time later this year, according to the company.

One of the contenders, the Kickin’ Chicken Taco, first launched in Thailand in 2019 and quickly became a favorite there. The taco features crispy chicken strips layered with lettuce, pico de gallo prepared fresh each day, and a blend of mozzarella, pepper jack, and cheddar cheeses. It’s finished with a Spicy Kickin’ sauce made from cheeses and spices, all wrapped in a warm flour tortilla.

The second option comes from India and was introduced in 2023 as part of Taco Bell’s “Desi Menu.” Inspired by the classic Indian butter chicken dish, the taco includes shredded slow-roasted chicken cooked in a tomato-cream sauce with bold spices. The filling is topped with onion, cilantro, lettuce, and cheddar cheese, then served inside a fried chalupa shell.

From March 26 through April 1, members of Taco Bell’s U.S. Rewards program can vote for their favorite through the Taco Bell mobile app. Participants can cast one vote each day, helping determine which taco will appear on menus later this year.

Amy Ellis Durini, Taco Bell International’s chief marketing and strategy officer, said the promotion highlights the creativity found on Taco Bell menus in different parts of the world while giving American customers a say in what comes next. She noted that both tacos already have strong fan bases in their home countries, and the company now wants U.S. customers to choose which one should join the domestic lineup.

Fans who want to participate can download the Taco Bell app and sign up for Taco Bell Rewards to begin voting.

The winner will be revealed on April 2.

This marks the third time Taco Bell has allowed fans to vote on menu decisions. In past promotions, customers chose which discontinued item would return to restaurants. The latest contest is the first time fans are deciding which new item will make its debut.

In 2022, voters chose between the Enchirito and the Double Decker Taco. The following year, the options were the Beefy Crunch Burrito and the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos.
