NEPHI — Authorities arrested a man early Wednesday morning after he reportedly drove about 18 miles in the wrong direction on Interstate 15 without crashing or causing injuries.

According to the Juab County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were alerted shortly after 2 a.m. to reports of a vehicle traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-15 just north of Scipio. A deputy later located the vehicle still on the interstate near Yuba Lake.

The deputy attempted to stop the driver by positioning his patrol vehicle and activating emergency lights and a siren in an effort to prevent the vehicle from continuing the wrong way. The driver passed the patrol car before stopping roughly 100 yards down the road, according to a police booking affidavit.

When the deputy approached and asked the driver what was happening, the man reportedly said that other vehicles were trying to hit him.

The deputy then asked where the driver was headed, and the man said he was traveling to Grand Rapids, Michigan. When asked where he had come from, the deputy reported he could not understand the response.

Authorities identified the driver as 34-year-old Yousif Mohamed Mustafa Anama. He was booked into the Juab County Jail on suspicion of eight counts of reckless endangerment — one for each 911 call reporting the wrong-way driver — as well as reckless driving and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Investigators say Anama traveled approximately 18 miles against traffic, putting numerous motorists at risk during the incident.
