IOC Implements New Rules to Ensure Fair Competition in Women’s Events

The International Olympic Committee announced Thursday that men will no longer be allowed to compete in women’s events, a policy set to take effect at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The new rules require genetic testing to confirm athletes’ eligibility for women’s categories, according to The New York Times.

IOC president Kristy Coventry, herself a former Olympic gold medalist, said the decision is rooted in science and aims to ensure fair competition. “Even the smallest differences can determine victory or defeat at the Olympic level,” she said in a statement. “It is clear that biological males competing in female events would be unfair, and in some sports, unsafe.”

Coventry emphasized that all athletes would be treated with respect. Screening would only occur once in an athlete’s lifetime, with guidance and medical advice provided throughout the process.

The policy has sparked criticism from some advocates. Payoshni Mitra, executive director of Humans of Sport, told The New York Times that the approach “polices women’s bodies” and risks putting athletes under public scrutiny.

The White House pointed out that President Donald Trump previously issued an executive order banning men from participating in women’s sports in the United States. “The IOC aligning its policy with President Trump’s Executive Order ahead of the 2028 LA Games is common sense and long overdue,” White House spokesperson Davis Ingle told The Washington Post.

According to an IOC statement, men are born with physical advantages over women that are maintained throughout life. Coventry reiterated in an interview with Inside the Games that the policy’s primary goal is protecting women’s competition, noting it was developed by medical experts with athletes’ interests in mind.

“This is a sensitive subject,” Coventry said, “but our focus is ensuring athletes compete on a fair and level playing field.”
