BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil — A mother in Minas Gerais has been cleared of murder after killing her boyfriend in an effort to protect her 11-year-old daughter from sexual assault.

Erica Pereira da Silveria Vicente admitted to killing Everton Amaro de Silva, saying she acted after discovering him attempting to rape her daughter. According to Estado de Minas, she rushed to her daughter’s aid after receiving alarming messages from de Silva to the preteen and found him on top of the girl.

Prosecutors had argued that the killing appeared premeditated. They alleged Vicente spiked de Silva’s drink with Klonopin, a medication used to treat seizures, and then stabbed and clubbed him while he was unconscious.

Afterward, a teenager who heard screams reportedly helped Vicente move the body to a vacant lot in Belo Horizonte, where she cut off de Silva’s genitals and set the body on fire. Police linked Vicente to the crime through a trail of blood leading to her apartment, where she surrendered the knife used in the attack.

Vicente maintained that her actions were intended to protect her daughter. The jury agreed, acquitting her of aggravated homicide and destruction of a corpse after just one day of testimony. She had already spent a year in detention awaiting trial.

The judge formally cleared Vicente of any wrongdoing, concluding the killing was carried out in defense of her child.
