Israel has announced it carried out a strike that killed a senior Iranian military leader, framing the operation as a move supportive of the United States. Defense Minister Israel Katz said the overnight attack targeted Alireza Tangsiri, head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ navy, along with other high-ranking officers allegedly involved in efforts to block shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil, according to the Washington Post. Iran has not publicly confirmed Tangsiri’s death.

Katz described the strike as aiding U.S. efforts to reopen the strategic waterway, which Tehran has attempted to restrict, causing oil prices to rise and unsettling energy markets. He also called it a warning to other Iranian leaders that Israel will act against them when necessary, the AP reports. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu labeled Tangsiri as a figure “with a great deal of blood on his hands,” according to the Jerusalem Post.

Separately, the U.S. has proposed a 15-point plan intended to resolve the nearly month-long conflict while maintaining its military presence in the region, the Post notes. On Truth Social, President Trump urged Iranian leaders to take negotiations seriously, warning that failure to do so would leave “NO TURNING BACK.” Pakistan has said it is facilitating communication between Washington and Tehran. Iran’s foreign minister confirmed these indirect exchanges but denied that formal talks are taking place.
