Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko Gives Kim a Rifle ‘in Case Enemies Show Up’

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang on Thursday, where the two leaders signed a treaty focused on friendship and cooperation between their countries.

Lukashenko traveled to North Korea for a two-day official visit. After the meeting, he described the agreement as a “fundamental” document and said the relationship between Belarus and North Korea is moving into what he called a new phase. According to his press service, Lukashenko acknowledged that the two nations had not worked closely together in the past, adding that Belarus shared responsibility for that limited cooperation. He said he was pleased to see the partnership now growing stronger.

During the visit, officials from both countries also finalized several additional agreements and memorandums aimed at expanding collaboration in specific sectors. These included cooperation in education, healthcare, and agriculture.

Lukashenko said that in the current international climate—where he argued that major powers disregard international law—countries that consider themselves independent should strengthen their cooperation with one another. Kim Jong Un, according to statements released by Lukashenko’s office, expressed full support and solidarity with Belarus and criticized what he described as unlawful pressure from Western nations.

The meeting also included a ceremonial exchange of gifts. Kim presented Lukashenko with a sword and a large decorative vase featuring the Belarusian leader’s image. Lukashenko, in turn, gave Kim several items, including an assault rifle manufactured in Belarus, joking that it could be useful “just in case enemies show up.”

The two leaders last met in September 2025 during talks in Beijing.
