Gypsy Rose slammed for ‘sick’ joke about murdered mom — but fans stand behind her:
Gypsy Rose Blanchard is facing backlash after making a controversial remark about her past on TikTok, sparking heated debate online.
In a viral video with content creator Natalie Reynolds, Blanchard participated in a popular trend where people share confessions under the phrase “we listen and we don’t judge.” During the clip, Blanchard, now 34, casually remarked that she spent eight and a half years in prison for killing her own mother. The comment quickly spread across social media and has drawn strong reactions from viewers.
Many people who watched the video criticized the remark, calling it inappropriate and disturbing. Some commenters argued that joking about a killing — particularly one involving a parent — crossed a line, even if Blanchard has already served her sentence.

Others, however, defended her. Supporters pointed out the years of abuse she endured at the hands of her mother, Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard. They argued that Gypsy’s life growing up involved severe mistreatment and manipulation, and some said her ability to speak about the past openly reflects her attempt to move forward.
In 2016, Blanchard was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in connection with her mother’s death. The killing occurred in June 2015 at their home in Springfield, Missouri.
According to testimony and court records, Blanchard convinced her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to carry out the stabbing. She later told the court she wanted to escape the control her mother had over her life.

Godejohn was convicted of first-degree murder and received a sentence of life in prison plus 25 years.
For years before the crime, Dee Dee Blanchard had presented her daughter as severely ill and disabled. Gypsy was forced to use a wheelchair and a feeding tube despite not needing them. She was also made to pretend she had serious medical conditions and the mental ability of a young child.
Gypsy’s defense team said Dee Dee suffered from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a psychological condition in which a caregiver fabricates or exaggerates illnesses in someone under their care in order to gain attention and sympathy.

The deception went on for years. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home in the early 2000s, the pair gained sympathy from the public. Donations poured in from charities and community members. They received gifts, including a free trip to Disney World and a new home built by Habitat for Humanity.
Authorities later learned that many of Gypsy’s supposed illnesses were fabricated. Doctors were told her medical records had been lost in the hurricane, and when suspicions arose, Dee Dee often changed physicians. She also shaved Gypsy’s head to make her appear like a cancer patient.
Gypsy later testified that the abuse went beyond the medical deception. She said her mother physically assaulted her and at times chained her to a bed.
As a teenager, Gypsy met Godejohn through a Christian dating website. Eventually she asked him to kill her mother. When the attack happened, Gypsy hid in the bathroom while Godejohn stabbed Dee Dee.
The pair fled after the killing but were captured several days later. Godejohn later told investigators he carried out the murder at Gypsy’s request using a knife she had provided.
Blanchard served eight and a half years of her sentence and was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center on December 23, 2023.
Despite completing her prison term, public reaction to her social media presence remains divided. Critics say her recent joke shows a lack of remorse, while supporters believe she deserves a chance to rebuild her life after enduring years of abuse.
