Firefighters rescue chubby cat trapped in massive recliner while trying to hide from the vet
A hefty orange cat found itself trapped in a mechanical recliner, sparking a dramatic rescue just hours before a routine veterinary appointment.
The Garfield-like feline had apparently been determined to avoid the vet on Saturday, somehow slipping into the metal framework of a reclining chair. Sharp springs and hinges made the situation dangerous, and photos shared by the Overland Park Police Department show the cat clinging for dear life. One firefighter supported the cat’s back legs while another focused on freeing a front paw. Meanwhile, the cat stared nervously at a firefighter wielding a screwdriver, refusing to let go of the metal grate.
Its rounded belly pressed against the chair as the recliner’s leg threatened to trap it further. Firefighters ultimately had to cut the chair in half with help from animal control to free the distressed pet.
Officials confirmed that, after the rescue, the cat still made it to its scheduled annual vet visit.
Social media quickly lit up with comments from cat lovers who recognized the familiar flight-from-the-vet instinct. “They will do anything to dodge the vet!” one user wrote. Another added, “Anyone with an orange cat knows this is standard behavior.”
The incident drew comparisons to other orange cat mishaps, including a 38-pound rescue cat named Crumbs who became stuck in a shoe rack in 2024 while trying to escape a diet regimen. In that viral photo, Crumbs’ face was buried in a blue Croc, his plump belly draped across the rack’s slots.
