Police in Niagara Falls shot and killed a dog Tuesday evening after officers responded to reports of several aggressive animals roaming near Thorold Stone Road and Kalar Road.
Niagara Regional Police said they were called to the area around 5:30 p.m. on March 24 after people reported three dogs running loose in traffic and chasing pedestrians. Witnesses alerted authorities as the animals moved through the area, creating a dangerous situation for drivers and people nearby.
According to police, one of the dogs bit a man, leaving him with minor injuries that were treated. Bystanders and motorists also attempted to help contain the animals. During the incident, one of the dogs scratched and damaged an SUV.
Officers attempted to gain control of the large dogs, but police say one of them suddenly moved aggressively toward an officer and forced the officer into the roadway. In response, the officer fired their service rifle, killing the dog at the scene.
The two remaining dogs were captured without further incident.
The Niagara SPCA and Humane Society responded and assumed responsibility for investigating the original dog bite and any potential bylaw violations related to the dogs being loose. Authorities said the two captured dogs were later returned to their owner.
Police say there is no longer any risk to the public. The dog that was shot was removed from the scene by the SPCA.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Niagara Regional Police Service’s 2 District office in Niagara Falls/Niagara-on-the-Lake at 905-688-4111, option 3, extension 1022200.
