DoorDash announced a short-term plan to provide additional pay for delivery drivers in the United States and Canada as fuel costs continue to climb, according to the Associated Press. The San Francisco delivery service revealed the changes on Monday while the average price of gasoline in the U.S. reached $3.96 per gallon, based on data from AAA. That price represents about a 35 percent increase compared with the previous month.
One part of the program provides a weekly fuel payment for drivers who log significant mileage while completing deliveries. Drivers in the United States who travel at least 125 miles during deliveries in a week will receive a payment starting at $5, with the possibility of receiving up to $15 depending on distance driven. In Canada, drivers will qualify for weekly fuel payments of up to 36 Canadian dollars, with the amount also tied to how far they drive while making deliveries.
The company is also increasing gas-related rewards for drivers who use the DoorDash debit card. Those drivers will now earn 10 percent cash back on gasoline purchases, a significant jump from the usual 2 percent rate. DoorDash says more than half of its drivers already use this debit card.
According to the company, both of these measures will remain in place until April 26. DoorDash recently rolled out a similar fuel assistance effort in Australia as well.
It remains uncertain whether competing delivery companies will introduce similar programs. Grubhub indicated last week that it is monitoring fuel prices closely as they continue to fluctuate.
