Canada’s Military Drill in the Arctic Flops in Extreme Cold Temperatures

A major Arctic military exercise organized by Canada ran into unexpected problems when extreme weather and equipment issues disrupted key parts of the operation.

The exercise came after President Donald J. Trump warned that the United States could take control of Greenland and suggested that Canada might become the 51st state. In response, Canada organized what it described as its largest Arctic military drills ever.

However, the operation faced serious challenges when the harsh environment interfered with the plan. One of the most visible problems occurred when a large hangar door at an airport froze shut, preventing equipment from being used as intended and highlighting Canada’s limited infrastructure in its northern territories compared with other Arctic nations.

According to reporting by The New York Times, soldiers who arrived on a High Arctic island encountered wind chill temperatures that plunged to minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The cold was so intense that most residents of Cambridge Bay, a small community on Victoria Island, remained indoors. The air filled with tiny ice crystals known as diamond dust, and the deep freeze locked the massive hangar door in place.

The exercise involved about 1,300 Canadian military personnel taking part in Operation Nanook, roughly triple the number involved in the previous year’s drills. Prime Minister Mark Carney recently announced a multibillion-dollar initiative aimed at expanding Canada’s military presence in the Arctic, part of what officials describe as the country’s largest defense spending increase in decades. Carney has also pledged to rebuild Canada’s defense industry to reduce reliance on the United States.

The drills were scheduled to run for two months and were partly meant to respond to expanding military activity in the Arctic by other countries. The United States has been strengthening its military presence in Alaska, while Russia has spent two decades building up its Arctic region.

Canada’s northern territory, despite being the world’s second-largest Arctic land area after Russia, has relatively little military infrastructure. There are no permanent bases in the far north and only limited transportation networks, including few major roads, deepwater ports, or large airports.

Because Cambridge Bay does not have a permanent military facility, command operations were set up at a NORAD Arctic research station. Troops were housed in local lodges, private homes, and even a senior center.

Part of the demonstration planned for visiting military officials involved transporting two M777 howitzers to a firing range about six miles west of the community. The artillery pieces had already been hauled roughly 1,000 miles north and then flown into Cambridge Bay aboard a C-130 Hercules aircraft. A Chinook helicopter was supposed to airlift the guns to the range for a live demonstration.

But the helicopter became unusable due to the freezing conditions. Officials then decided to tow one of the howitzers to the firing site while leaving the second behind because of mechanical problems.

When the day of the demonstration arrived, a plane carrying visiting officials landed and the group traveled to the range to observe the artillery firing. At that point, another complication arose. Severe weather forced several regional airports to close, leaving Cambridge Bay as one of the few usable airfields for diverted aircraft.

To keep the airspace clear for potential emergency landings, military officials abruptly canceled the artillery demonstration. The planned firing never took place.
