7 Dogs Were Kidnapped. Pack had been kidnapped for illegal meat trade in China, but these clever pets had other ideas

A group of seven pet dogs made a remarkable journey home in northeast China after escaping from a transport truck that their owners say was taking them to the illegal meat trade. The incident took place in Jilin province, where the dogs, belonging to three households in the same village, traveled more than 10 miles over two days to return safely, according to NDTV.

The animals, described by the South China Morning Post as “typically roaming freely together and having formed strong friendships,” reportedly slipped from their cage and jumped from a moving truck on the Changshuang Expressway. Leading the pack was a corgi, later identified by the Telegraph as Dapang, while a golden retriever seemed to act as a lookout and an injured German shepherd in the center set the pace for the others.

Footage captured on March 16 by a passerby named Lu shows the dogs walking along the highway in a loose formation. Lu attempted to guide them to safety but was unsuccessful, eventually sharing the video on social media and calling for help. The clip quickly went viral, attracting volunteers and prompting a search using drones. By Thursday, all seven dogs had been located and reunited with their owners.

“We are so lucky they came back, not to be eaten,” one owner, whose German shepherd and golden retriever were part of the group, told reporters. Another owner highlighted the corgi’s intelligence and ability to navigate home.

Dog theft remains a crime in China, but incidents continue in northern cities like Changchun, Harbin, and Dalian, where some restaurants still serve dog meat despite growing public opposition. Because raising dogs for meat is expensive, stray and stolen pets are often targeted. Online, the story has attracted more than 230 million views, with commenters praising the dogs’ teamwork, the corgi’s leadership, and the community and officials who helped bring them home.
